"I live here on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. I'm not looking so much into selling horses or making profit from them but mainly for preservation of the old Lakota /Native Lines, reintroducing them back to our people, healing for our children that are hurting and lost, taking the horses on the annual Chief Bigfoot /Crazy Horse memorial rides and other rides we have throughout the year. We do traditional Lakota young men's and women's camps so I want to teach them about our relationship with the horse nations. Also I work at an all girls school and will like to incorporate the horse into the curriculum. One of my horses is a 2 yr old Mustang/Appy Grulla stud, a 3 yr old Mustang/Nakota Grulla mare, and a 1 year old blue roan mustang filly (Yvette said they are from Lakota lines but I am not sure exactly what lines)?. The 2 yr old Bay Curly filly is different then the rest. She's more docile and acts like will be a breeze to train. The grullas are a little more on the wild side."

Jon Eagle Sr.Jon Eagle Sr <joneaglesr@gmail.com> Wednesday, August 12, 2020. FB Msg from Jon Eagle Sr., Tribal Historic Preservation Officer, Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. "Hi Donna. I'm curious now. Curly horses came up at a recent meeting with Hunkpapa horsemen. I'd like to track these horses down if there are any left? Are there any from the Bad Warrior line available? They came up in a conversation with older relatives from Little Eagle, SD. They kept saying SanSan. I never heard that word before so I asked. That's our word for curly horses. They told me the story; then I remembered you reaching out to me years ago. I went back through my messenger and realized that was the same horse(s) they were taking about. The sorrel stud (Teddy's red dun brother) on the left looks like what they described. Also the mare on the left in the photos you sent also looks like what they described. (Angelica) I speak Lakota but I have never heard anyone speak of these horses before and didn't understand “SanSan.” There was a sadness in their story. They asked me to track them down if I can. I promised them I'd try. Ernie was a friend of my dad's. I didn't make the connection before. When foals are available we'd be interested."

Thu Sept 1 (2017?). Hi Donna, I am interested in learning more about preserving the stock horse curly horses. I am not sure how I can fit in yet though. I would like to touch back with you after the holiday weekend as we are getting ready to leave on vacation in about an hour. I only have two curly mares (one is full ABC warrior lines, the other is full ABC, but has quarter horse way back. She looks like a stock horse). I am somewhat new to the curly world (only had curlies for about 4 years now due to son's allergies). It took me forever to find broke stock type curlies that can compete in 4H and open shows with the quarter horses. I would love to see more of these stock horse curlies in the show world. Maybe I can help in some small way. Looking forward to chatting with you next week.
this needs follow up, I never got back with her... she had a beautiful grey Warrior bred horse from what I can remember.

Curly Spanish Stockhorses

Unicorns of the Horse World: The way a Spanish Curly Stockhorse is identified and defined is simply by its Spanish pedigree. It must be identified with a verifiable pedigree, and/ or registered by an existing Spanish Studbook Registry. These unique curly horses will also be checked to see whether they are hypoallergenic to people allergic to straight haired horses.

Wild Curly Mustangs

When Adopting Curly Mustangs to use in PRESERVATION Breeding:

It is relevant to understand geography in the history of the 2 breeds of western (KRT25 mutation) curly horses...

The Damele "breed" branched off from Berndt ancestors centuries ago. They migrated to the Owyhee Desert, in the Great Basin, where all water sources are retained, and do not flow to the oceans. Because of this, not following streams or rivers, the KRT25 horses that migrated to the Owyhee Desert centuries ago pretty much stayed there and developed into their own breed of curly horse, that we know as the Damele horse of today. Ideally, wild curlies adopted from the Great Basin herds should be used in Damele horse preservation.

For preservation of the Bad Warrior horses, curly mustangs adopted from Checkerboard Square herds would be more desireable. The northwestern wild Curly Horses would be more directly or more recently related to the remnant Bad Warrior horses left alive today.

VOLUNTEERs: Approach BLM with an official appeal to not castrate males of the rare old curly wild horses that are still left out there, when rounded up for adoption. This has been a major issue. Not sure if someone representing a heritage association would carry sufficient (or any) weight or not. But is worth a try. There may be a Sulphur roundup coming. Any volunteers?
Could we get Mitch on board with this... Angie works against me and blocks me on FB

Sacred Way Spirit Horses • practices anti-preservation breeding practices • Yvette Collin • Florence AL ~ AK university educated... this gal capitalizes on her native heritage, but allows her native & heritage breed horses to intermingle and has the stallions choose their own mare bands, claiming this is the natural way to do it. She discards papers of horses she buys/gets in on donation; and does not keep pedigrees or bloodlines documented and will not pass forward pedigree or breed information on horses she sells to buyers. All breeds & bloodlines are mixed together, to the loss of each native horse type.

Sacred Way Sanctuary (work only with followers that don't subscribe to mongrelized breeding practices of rare horses)

Hi Donna,
I just read your post on the Bad Warrior/Berndt line. I am someone who is interested in being kept in the loop about this line (and any indigenous horse line). We have Berndt and Bad Warrior curlies here in Saskatchewan, my mother-in-law (Linda Moore - her FB name is Linda MHM -- I'll talk with her, as she has all our horses' genetic info.) has been involved/following this page for a while.
My master's thesis is on the horse and human relationship specific to Indigenous horses. I am also on the board of directors for The Red Pony Stands Ojibwe Horse Sanctuary who are partners with the Native American Horse Trail and have been working on a few projects regarding equine assisted learning and indigenous horses.
Anyways - I have interests in preserving this line although I'm a young mom who doesn't have the time to be actively breeding etc. However, like I said, I would love to be kept in the loop as there will come a time that I will. We also have some young mares that may be suitable for breeding/preserving the line if interested.
Thanks! Just wanted to establish a connection??

Hello Kelsey,
I was doing some email followup work today, and ran across a message I had saved from you, which, I BELIEVE I did answer, but, have not found it so... so I don't drop the ball, I am emailing you today to make sure.
I have a number of friends on several reservations, in the Dakotas and Montana. We are attempting this year, to get a number of preservation herds going, in answer to the horse elders request on the Standing Rock Rez, and, in answer to promises I made to an old breeder decades ago...
I want to tell you something, or caution you about something (VERY carefully) so as I don't make any waves, or, cause you or anyone at all, any grief. So here goes...
The main lady in Alabama, that your Red Pony Sanctuary is affiliated with, etc., is a (I believe) probably a very nice lady, with good intentions, but with poor (actually potentially destructive) policies with her Sanctuaries. No one knows this more, than the Native Americans that have dealt with her.
And, that is not uncommon with most rescues and sanctuaries, because, honestly, to be a successful, ordained sanctuary, and get the all-important entitlement to public donations or government sponsored funding, etc., they often are not set up, encouraged or at all rewarded to be true constructive projects, but, to only use the right words, and employ successful, professional grant-writing, etc. The horses usually just are not a genuine focus, nor well researched.
The reality is, rare horses are actually rarely preserved in most sanctuaries. If any genuinely rare horses exist in these sanctuaries (which is doubtful, and probably not often, thankfully), they would be exposed to deterioration of their bloodlines, and subjected to sacrifice of their rare pedigrees, in the name of...  sentimental breeding policies and secretism, that preserve no rare horses at all, but blends any of them away into obliteration.
And with her resources, if the Alabama family of Sanctuaries could / would do it right, they could help answer so many prayers.
Anyway, as it is right now, we are working with genuine potential preservation project plans (wish us luck)... with the Lakota people and with some Crow guys too. Their horse elders asked them to try to save the old SanSan horse, if possible. It is what me and a few other breeders have been trying to do for over 30 years.
If you ever want to discuss any of these issues and realities, you are SO welcome to text me or give me a call. We would love to have more participation, and would so gladly accept any support or promotions with you. It would be a privilege to speak with you some time.

Hi Donna,
I need to clarify that the Red Pony Stands Ojibwe Horse Sanctuary is NOT directly affiliated with Sacred Way Sanctuary (the one in Alabama), only through membership with the Native American Horse Trail (NAHT). I am aware of Sacred Way's unique approach to preservation, respect it, but we have very difference views. The Red Pony Stands is very intentional and careful about their breeding plans and tracking the DNA for LLCIP's.
My personal interest is in preserving the Indigenous lines of curly horses, and of course implementing an Indigenous-based equine assisted education program with Indigenous horses.
Kelsey Moore
